Sigh. tsk.tsk.tsk.

The S$7 million pumped into the Football Association of Singapore is barely enough compared to Japan and Korea’s of $40+million. If you know a little something about football like I do, you would say that Singapore’s campaign in this year’s AFF Suzuki Cup was a total disaster. Raddy Avramovic’s tactics of the past of quick play and precise passing were not even seen on the pitch every game. From the disappointing draw with the Philippines to the boring lucky win over Myanmar.

You could only imagine my great frustration watching them play with not even half of the Premier League tempo and central midfielders of young and inexperienced Shahdan Sulaiman & Persela Lamongan’s  Fahrudin Mustafic nowhere to be seen. Mustafic whom has been a commander of Singapore’s midfield for the past few years was not playing as well as he was capable of . Blind passes given away freely every game they played and not to mention, one could almost say foolish long balls all easily waited by opposition defenders to be headed away.

The biggest joke was how the Singapore media made Agu Casmir look so good after scoring the winning goal in the 2-1 win against Myanmar. The media barely blasted the team for the boring football they played as if they did not want to even be on the pitch.

Final words from me are that this should be a wake up call, well wake up calls were everywhere for the past few years. This is the time for the football association to buck up its efforts in improving the S League and player development and also for the government who so badly wants sporting achievements around the world and I mean real sports, not ping-pong or bowling or sailing, please, its time for us to show the world that Singapore can win real sports.

The leaders talk about how our athletes are not achieving enough, well YOU can start with improving the pay of athletes and give them financial security when they retire for giving their full commitment to the sport. With their peers earning more than them after attaining a degree, its obvious anyone would opt for the latter.
